Preparing Teachers for the Human Realities of Professional Practice
The Center for Sustainable Teaching is a research-informed educational center dedicated to strengthening the professional capacity and long-term sustainability of teachers. Its work focuses on the emotional and relational dimensions of teaching that influence classroom stability, instructional effectiveness, and career longevity.
Teacher preparation programs are highly effective in developing instructional technique and content knowledge. Less attention, however, has been given to preparing teachers for the emotional and interpersonal realities that shape daily classroom life and influence whether teachers remain in the profession.
The Center develops academically grounded course content designed to address this gap. Its flagship course, Teaching as Emotional and Relational Practice, develops the professional judgment teachers need to navigate complex classroom dynamics, establish sustainable professional boundaries, and build productive learning environments.
These capacities are essential not only for effective teaching, but for the stability and continuity of the profession itself.
