Professional Learning for the Human Side of Teaching

The Center for Sustainable Teaching is a research-informed educational center dedicated to strengthening the professional capacity and long-term sustainability of teachers. Its work focuses on the emotional and relational dimensions of teaching that influence classroom stability, instructional effectiveness, and career longevity.

Teacher preparation programs are highly effective in developing instructional technique and content knowledge. Less attention, however, has been given to preparing teachers for the emotional and interpersonal realities that shape daily classroom life and influence whether teachers remain in the profession.

The Center develops academically-grounded  workshops  designed to support the emotional, relational, and communication demands of modern teaching.  Its flagship workshop, Teacher Talk Under Pressure:  Communication, Escalation, and Professional Authority in the Classroom, helps educators examine how language, emotional tone, public correction, and rapid decision-making influence classroom climate, student responses, and professional sustainability.  The workshop develops practical professional judgment for navigating difficult classroom interactions while maintaining authority, reducing unnecessary escalation, and preserving productive working relationships.

These capacities are essential not only for effective teaching, but for the stability and continuity of the profession itself.
